People often search for a “Japan visa renewal fee,” but a resident already in Japan usually means an extension of period of stay or change of status of residence. A visa issued overseas, a status of residence, and a Residence Card are different things. Start by identifying the task before using a fee amount.

Use ISA's acceptance record—not the day you began preparing, received the result, paid, collected a card, or traveled. The first row shows the schedule immediately before the October change. An application accepted by March 31, 2025 may follow an earlier schedule; use the amount tied to that acceptance date and your result notice. For an online filing, ISA says to check the email containing the temporary or final application acceptance number. A September 30-or-earlier application keeps its applicable earlier amount and payment route even when the decision comes after October 1.
The cutoff is not a reason to submit an incomplete application or guess which channel is available. Follow the deadline and filing instructions for your real procedure.

These are fees for permission after ISA decides the application. They are not prices for buying a chosen period. Do not buy revenue stamps or budget from the period you requested; wait for the amount tied to the period actually granted.

Permanent Residence Has a Separate Fee
For a permanent-residence application accepted from October 1, the permission fee is JPY 200,000. An application accepted from April 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026 retains the JPY 10,000 fee even if ISA decides it later; an older pending application follows the earlier fee tied to its acceptance date. ISA collects the fee when permission is granted.
Under ISA's current scope, permanent-residence applications must be made through the responsible counter; the residence application online system does not accept them. If your present period of stay will expire while permanent residence is pending, the permanent-residence procedure says you still need a separate extension application by the applicable deadline.
The JPY 200,000 is not a periodic “PR renewal” fee. Permanent Resident status has no period-of-stay extension. Renewing the physical Residence Card's validity is the separate no-fee card procedure identified above.
How to Pay After a Counter Application
- File with the responsible office and keep the receipt or acceptance record.
- Wait for the result notice. Use the amount shown for the period ISA actually granted.
- Obtain that amount in Japanese revenue stamps. ISA asks applicants to use a large post office where possible because nearby shops and convenience stores may not hold the required denominations.
- Follow the responsible office's instructions for the fee form, result collection, and card or document receipt.
ISA says revenue-stamp purchases are cash-only. That does not mean the immigration counter takes an ordinary cash, credit-card, or QR-code payment. The counter route pays the permission fee with revenue stamps. Avoid buying an amount based on a hoped-for period: unused stamps cannot simply be converted back to cash, and exchanges are subject to ISA and Japan Post rules.
How to Pay After an Eligible Online Application
For an application accepted online from October 1:
- Confirm that the user, status, and procedure are currently supported online.
- Use the temporary or final application acceptance-number email to confirm the accepted date.
- After the online system sends the examination-completion email, wait for a separate payment message showing the fee and payment link.
- Check that the payment sender address ends in
@service-dgft.com. - Follow the official link for a supported convenience-store or bank payment, including the published processing charge. Bank payment can include internet banking; not every convenience store participates.
- Keep the payment confirmation and follow ISA's card or document receipt instructions.
Post-October online applications cannot use revenue stamps. ISA says it will not send a paper payment notice, and the route does not support credit-card or QR-code payment.
Payment-email warning
ISA says online residence-application fee instructions come only from an address ending in
@service-dgft.com. Do not open the payment link or pay if the demand comes from another domain. Check the actual address, not only the display name. If anything is unclear, reopen ISA's current online payment notice through an officialmoj.go.jppage and use a verified official help route.
Reductions and Exemptions Are Narrow
A reduction is not a general low-income discount. ISA's framework requires both its published economic-hardship condition and one of its published humanitarian categories, supported by the required material. Meeting only one side is not enough.
For a qualifying change or extension involving a period over three months, the published reduced amount is JPY 10,000. For qualifying permanent-residence permission, it is JPY 20,000, and ISA limits that route to the spouse or child categories identified in its guidance. The online system does not support reduction requests, so a person seeking one must apply at the counter with the evidence.
Full exemptions are confined to the official-status and designated-activity cases ISA lists. A person receiving a Specified Residence Card at the same time may also have a separate card charge. Other Fees That Are Easy to Mix Up
- Re-entry permission and a Certificate of Authorized Employment: ISA says their underlying online fee amounts do not change on October 1, but the new online payment route adds a JPY 220 processing charge. Check the official online fee table.
- Specified Residence Card: integration can create a separate card charge based on the procedure and card choices. It does not belong inside the change-or-extension table.
- Visa issued overseas: MOFA and the responsible embassy or consulate control that separate application and fee. Do not use the domestic residence-permission table for it.
- Professional, translation, postage, or travel costs: these are not ISA permission fees and are not included above.
FAQ
Does every Japan “visa renewal” cost the maximum amount?
No. First identify whether you mean an extension, status change, card procedure, overseas visa, or permanent-residence permission. For a post-October change or extension, the channel and period ISA grants determine the applicable row.
Can I choose the online price?
Only if your user type, status, and procedure are eligible under the current online rules and you file through that system. The published online price does not create eligibility, and ISA—not the applicant—decides the period granted.
What if I applied in September but receive the result in October?
The accepted date controls. An application accepted by September 30 keeps the earlier fee and payment route even if permission is granted later.
Is the new permanent-residence fee charged every time a Permanent Resident renews a card?
